Hello, everyone!!
Today I met up with Cherrish and if you recall from my last post about this apprenticeship, I mentioned how Cherrish and I were going to work on a mood board for her upcoming collection. Well today she pulled out all of her vintage sewing and fashion and lifestyle magazines for us to look through and find images to put on her board. Cherrish's collection is inspired by Audrey Hepburn and will carry a vintage and classy aesthetic.
As I was flipping through the vintage lifestyle and fashion magazines, I was a bit surprised. I mean, they were still magazines at the end of the day, containing articles and a whole bunch of ads. However, I found something unique about the lifestyle magazines. The fashion spreads that they included not only had a picture of the garment, but they also included the steps necessary to make the garment as well!! If only the magazines of today still carried this concept/feature.
While looking through the magazines, Cherrish told me that she was taking an online course called "Handmade Titan University," which tells you about the ins and outs of running a creative/handmade business. She learned that as far as fashion design is concerned, one should start with a base collection of approximately 10 looks, and produce a seasonal collection on the side (optional).
Cherrish personally suggested that for me, I could start out with focusing on something as simple as bow ties. Hey, Ralph Lauren started out with designing ties, so who knows where designing bow ties could take me!! Cherrish also pointed out to me that with so many people wearing casual clothing more often, it would be a good idea for me to think about creating formal wear, given that people do love to get dressed up for special occasions.
I am so grateful for the information that Cherrish shared with me today!! I will definitely look into that online business course as well as what direction I should start in as far as fashion design is concerned.
